Just received a grain mill? This collection of delicious, nutrient-dense, and satisfying fresh milled flour recipes is perfect for getting you started on the right foot with fail-proof recipes that everyone is sure to love!
Baking with fresh milled flour is the most rewarding thing I’ve learned to do as a home baker.
First of all, it unlocks a new level of flavor. If you’re the type of person who grinds their own coffee for a fresher taste, grates their own cheese for better flavor and melting, or who would visit a bakery for bread rather than buy a loaf of Sara Lee, you’re going to notice the nutty, wholesome flavor fresh flour gives to baked goods.
But even more importantly, fresh whole-grain flour is a rewarding way to add more nutrients into our diets. Because the bran and germ are removed from white flour, regular bagged flour is devoid of fiber.
Stop Blaming Wheat
White flour is enriched with synthetic vitamins to address the micronutrient deficiencies that increased after refined grains were introduced. It’s no secret that the nutrient quality of our food is a big deal.
It’s also no secret that in recent years, the perception of gluten has soured in the wellness world. Some people are indeed seriously allergic to gluten (just as you can be with any food), but much of the criticism for gluten is the result of ultra-processing and eating wheat that is a far cry from what it was intended to be.
Just as you wouldn’t consider a hotdog on par with minimally processed pasture-raised animals, you can’t judge the outcomes of grains by a package of Oreos or even the “whole grain” products off a store shelf.
Learning how to make some of your favorite grain-based foods with nutrient-dense ingredients is one of the most rewarding things you can do for your health!
Without further ado, let’s explore some of my favorite fresh-milled flour recipes!
