There are just some foods where a side of ranch is non-negotiable. Chicken wings, chicken strips, buffalo chicken anything! Even pizza!

Traditional ranch dressing is delicious, but it’s also high in calories. As a volume eater, sometimes I need to find ways to make swaps so my meals and healthy snacks meet my macro goals while still being satisfying.

I have tried a lot of ways to make protein ranch dressing, and most of them were just…meh. Once I discovered the perfect balance of dairy products and seasonings to achieve the right consistency and flavor, it was a game changer!

This high protein salad dressing is easy to make with simple ingredients you can find at any grocery store.

This is a synopsis of the recipe card with a photo of a jar of protein ranch with a spoon.

Healthy Homemade Ranch Ingredients

  • Plain Greek Yogurt – I use 2% for a bit of added creaminess, but nonfat will work if you’d like to reduce calories further.
  • Kefir – Use plain, unsweetened kefir. I use 1% fat. Kefir is a great alternative to buttermilk! It’s lower in fat and calories, plus it’s loaded with probiotics.
  • Light Sour Cream – Light sour cream is a great addition to protein ranch! It has a mellow flavor that balances out the other ingredients’ tanginess.
  • Dried Herbs & Spices – I made my own DIY ranch seasoning mix for this recipe, but you can use a ranch seasoning packet, too. If using ranch packets, I recommend starting with just half a packet and tasting before adding more.

No fancy equipment needed! Just a mixing bowl and a whisk.

Protein Ranch Instructions

Making this high-protein and delicious homemade ranch dressing couldn’t be easier. Simply add all of the ingredients to a mixing bowl and whisk together.

You can serve immediately, or you can pour it into an airtight container, such as a mason jar, and store in the refrigerator. This dressing is best used within one week.

Variations & Substitutions

Make this healthier ranch dressing your own with some tweaks!

  • Seasonings: Add 1/2 tsp of chipotle seasoning to make a southwest-style ranch, or a tsp of sriracha to add a delicious kick!
  • Herbs: Use fresh herbs in place of the dried dill, parsley, and chives.
  • Sour Cream: If needed, you can use regular sour cream, though that will increase the total fat and calories in the recipe.
  • Kefir: I recommend using kefir, but if you cannot find it, you can replace it with an additional 2 tbsp Greek yogurt plus 3 tbsp light sour cream, adding a little water if needed to thin it out. This will slightly change the flavor of the dressing.
