Rustic Irish Soda Bread in Cast Iron Skillet

Crunchy crust with a tender crumb, this delicious whole meal Irish soda bread is so quick and easy to make!

All you need is some whole wheat pastry flour, buttermilk, cold butter, molasses, salt, and baking soda.

1. Gather Ingredients

Add the flour, baking soda, and salt to the bowl and whisk together. Use a grater or zester to grate 2 tbsp cold butter into the flour mix. Stir.

2. Mix Dry Ingredients & Butter

Pour the buttermilk into the bowl and add the molasses. Stir with a wooden spoon until evenly combined. It will be sticky.

3. Add Liquid Ingredients

Use a wet hand to shape the dough into a ball. Pour out onto a parchment-lined cast iron skillet, and use the wet hand to smooth the top. Score in a cross pattern with a knife.

4. Shape & Score

Place the cast iron skillet uncovered into the oven. Bake at 450F for 20 min, then lower heat to 400F and bake for 20 more minutes.

5. Bake

This bread looks done before it is. Confirm it reached an internal temp of 205-210 before placing on a cooling rack to cool.

6. Check Temp

Goes perfectly with Irish stews or even just for a quick loaf of dinner bread. Very nutritious and full of fiber from the whole wheat flour!
